DO YOU NEED TO STEP UP RESILIENCE?

A lot is written about the changing nature of business today and there are countless blogs, books, tweets and columns on why is this is happening and what is changing. However, little attention is given to the ‘how’. For example, how do organisations adapt to such changes and ensure leaders and managers effectively deal with the impact of change on their teams?

Businesses should ask themselves: how can we build resilience in our people so that they can manage and thrive in the new business environment? This new environment could be anything from a change in staff structure or growth strategy, or simply new clients coming on board.

For us, human resilience is best described as ‘bounce-back-ability’ – it is the human quality that allows us to bounce back from times of adversity. It’s not just a ‘coping mechanism’, though; it’s our ability to accept the challenges and set-backs in our lives and come back stronger than before.

Applying this to a workplace setting, here are five skills we should develop if we are to be more resilient as organisations:
• Rational thinking – when a problem arises, take a step back and try to rationally interpret what is going on, what the plan is and how you can best reach a solution.
• Emotional regulation – recognise how both you and your team react to any given situation, whether it’s positive or negative, and look at how strong feelings, emotions and impulses can be managed.
• Problem solving – don’t take a problem at face value and try to explore it from multiple perspectives to gauge the most appropriate course of action
• Communication – encourage team members to talk to each other and their managers. We’ve become a nation of workers hiding behind our keyboards, but there’s no substitute for talking face to face.
• Positive self-image – confidence is key and it’s important to have a positive view of your own strengths and weaknesses if you are to portray a resilient nature to both colleagues and clients.
